Trying to figure out your dental insurance plan can be a headache. There are deductibles to meet, annual maximums to watch, and networks to understand -- where does your actual dental care fit in? At Antoon Family Dental, we know insurance is confusing. Your insurance dentist is here to help you make the most out of your benefits.
When you have dental insurance, you will need to select a dentist who is in-network with your provider. In-network dentists have come to an agreement with the dental insurance company to provide care at a reduced rate to you. Find a list of in-network dentists on your provider’s website.
But even if a dentist is out-of-network with your insurance, you may still be eligible to receive discounts on your dental care. PPOs (preferred provider organizations) allow you the freedom to choose your medical professional, without network restrictions. And even a dentist who is out-of-network with your HMO (health maintenance organization) may file your claim for you. Call your dentist to find out about your coverage.
Dental insurance works like your medical insurance. Most have a premium, or the fixed amount you pay (usually monthly) in exchange for your benefits. If you have a deductible, you must pay a certain amount of money out-of-pocket before your benefits kick in.
Your plan has an annual maximum, or the amount of money beyond which your dental insurance will not pay. Most plans are on an annual calendar, meaning your benefits will renew on January 1 each year. If you have met your deductible but not reached your annual maximum by the end of the year, contact your dentist to find out how you can make the most out of your benefits before they expire.
Use your dental insurance benefits to the fullest to enjoy better oral health. Because preventive dentistry is crucial to a healthy, long-lasting smile, your dental insurance plan should fully cover two checkups and hygiene visits per year. You may receive a set of x-rays for free each year, too. And if you need any restorative dental care (like fillings, extractions, or root canal therapy), those services should be at least partially covered, too.
How can you take full advantage of your dental insurance plan? By understanding just what benefits you are eligible for, and when. Contact your insurance company to discuss your plan. Make a list of questions beforehand to make sure you have all of your doubts resolved. Some questions you may want to ask include…
- What services are fully covered under my plan? Partially?
- Do I have to pay for preventive care if I haven’t met my deductible?
- Are other members of my family eligible for dental care under my plan?
- What benefits do I have left this year?
If you receive dental coverage through your employer, you can also discuss your plan with your human resources department.
