No one likes getting cavities. You have to take time out of your busy schedule to attend a separate appointment to get a filling. That’s why, at Antoon Family Dental, we do our utmost to educate our patients on how to keep their smiles healthy by preventing cavities. Regular checkups and cleanings coupled with at-home oral hygiene can go a long way in avoiding tooth decay. But what if there were an extra way to give your smile a boost of cavity protection? Fortunately, there is—with a treatment called dental sealants. Keep reading to learn more about what dental sealants are and how they can benefit you or your child’s oral health.

What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a clear plastic compound that is painted onto the teeth to form a protective barrier that bacteria have a difficult time penetrating. When sealants have been applied to the teeth, they fill in the pits and grooves of at-risk teeth where food debris and bacteria typically accumulate, drastically reducing the risk of cavities.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Sealants?

More often than not, we recommend dental sealants for our younger patients who are still learning how to take care of their smiles. Oftentimes, children have a hard time reaching their little arms all the way into the back of their mouths to clean their molars. As a result, food particles can build up in those nooks and crannies, attracting bacteria that cause cavities. For this reason, we can apply sealants to those teeth to keep your little one’s smile healthy.

Sealants are not solely for children, though. If you’re an adult who has a history of frequent cavities, we can also place sealants on your molars or even your front teeth to greatly decrease your risk.

How Are Sealants Placed?

The great thing about dental sealants is that they can be applied quickly and easily at your or your child’s next dental checkup, with the whole process only taking about half an hour. Dr. Sam Antoon can paint a thin layer of sealants material onto the teeth. Next, we use a low heat curing light to harden the sealants into place. Once this step is complete, you can trust that the sealants will stay in place for a year or even longer before they need to be reapplied.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Sealants?

Some of the many advantages of dental sealants are:

  • Improved oral health. The most apparent reason to get sealants is that they help protect your or your child’s teeth from decay.
  • Boost of confidence. Because kids are a lot less likely to get cavities after receiving sealants, they will be more confident in their ability to care for their smiles. Children who frequently suffer from tooth decay can get frustrated and even give up on brushing and flossing altogether because they might feel that it’s useless. Dental sealants can restore their confidence in their oral hygiene skills.
  • Better experiences in the dental office. If a child has fewer cavities, they’re more likely to feel comfortable visiting their dentist in Plano. As a family dental practice, we want to help your son or daughter forge positive associations with their dentist’s office so that they’re more comfortable seeking out dental care on their own when they’re older.

If you or your child are interested in an easy treatment that drastically cuts down the risk of tooth decay, contact us at Antoon Family Dental today to schedule an appointment to receive dental sealants. We can’t wait to help improve the health of your smile!
